Virtual Paintout in School

Hello everyone. As some of you know I started a project a while back that I call the Virtual Paintout. The purpose is for artists to gather, virtually, in a designated area in the world each month through the use of Google Street View (accessed through Google Maps), and paint or draw a subject of their choosing. The artist then sends me a pic of their work and I post it on the blog.

This project has grown quickly over the past couple of months and looks like we might get close to 100 submissions for January. One of the folks that has started to participate is Melinda Campbell. Melinda is an art teacher of sixth grade students in a public school system here in the States. She has integrated the VP idea into her class, and said she was surprised at how many students chose Washington, D.C. and New York City. She said that many chose their on homes as a subject also. And that their behavior was excellent, they were involved, and so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. Melinda also says that she was able to "cross discipline and integrate geography, social studies, math, language arts, history and science in with the art lesson."

She sent 10 pics of some of the work, which I'm adding here. I hope you enjoy them. I certainly did.

I am so impressed! These are ALL great drawings!
Thank you, Bill, for starting the Virtual Paintout, and thank you, Melinda, for bringing it to students.
Aside from enjoying the limitless subject matter provided through Street View, I am getting a "real time", firsthand knowledge of modern daily life in other countries around the world.
Yay to Melinda, and Melinda's class of artists! Draw draw draw!

Wow, these drawings are fantastic, and what a great idea to involve school kids in this project. I know I have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in VP and it got me to try painting landscapes for the first time. I too have been encouraging others, including telling those on my art course at college. It's a fantastic idea and I'm sure the site will continue to grow. Thanks Bill!

That's just fantastic, Bill. What great oaks from little acorns grow.
The childrens' artwork is very good and I hope it will lay the groundwork for a lifetime of sketching and pleasure for them.

Bill - and it all started with the seed you planted. This is so exciting, and I am sure these children will remember the experience and their wonderful drawings for a long, long time!
Thanks for getting this whole idea off the ground - you've impacted so many of us!

This student work is stunning! What a great story--it's so nice to read of students really connecting. Their teacher must be so proud ... and you too!

I've just stumbled across your web site while reading another blog! What an intersting concept of sharing art and knowledge you have created! Love the children's art work, indeed quite a collection. They are so free spirited in their approach.
Will drop in again.
