"Fenced"
20" x 30", oil on linen
This is a Street View from Switzerland. Even though I signed it, I think I'll chew on this one for a few days and see if anything jumps out that needs fixing. Thanks for looking.

Elizabeth Street
"Elizabeth Street"
8" x 10", oil on mounted linen
A bit of a departure from what I've been doing lately in a few different ways. This one is small, an 8" x 10". Lately I've been doing mostly 24" x 30", with a few smaller and a few bigger. Another difference is the palette knife work. Nothing but knife on this one baby! Back a few months ago I worked with a knife for a LOT of my paintings. Started with the State Series, ya know, 50 small paintings done with a palette knife will get you in the groove. I then did a few plein air pieces with the knife, of which most sold, so there's got to be something to that.
I recently received word that I'll be participating in a small works show at the esteemed Abend Gallery in Denver during the Holiday Season. So, small works equals 8 x 10. ;) I was also told that my knife paintings would probably do well in the area. So, knife paintings do well equals knife paintings. ;)
I had forgotten how much fun I have painting with the palette knife. It seems to free me from the trappings of detail. And anything that makes me simplify has got to be good for me, right?
Don't worry though. I've got a stretched blank 24" x 30" staring at me...

The Road Back Home
Here's one I started tonight. A big one for me, 30" x 40" on a linen canvas I stretched today. I've been stretching on 1 1/2" stretcher bars and like the sturdiness it gives.
I like how this painting is progressing, although I'm not painting in my usual way. For one, I usually paint alla prima, in one sitting/session. But not tonight for a couple of reasons... a) I'm tired and my elbow hurts. b) I want this first night's effort to dry a bit before I start adding color tomorrow. The ground is thin, and the darks are thinned Burnt Umber, so both should be good by the time get back to it.
The other difference is the use of a small brush at the beginning stage. Normally I'll use a big 1 1/2" or 2" bristle brush to throw down some big shapes quickly. Well, with this one I felt the need to slow down and get my center of interest correctly drawn and in the right place on the canvas before doing anything else. After I got the COI drawn I continued with the small brush, a #1 bristle, and sketched with it only, to the point you see here.
If someone could please play taps for my little brush I'd appreciate it. Or, you could call the cops on me, 'cause I killed it. It's a nub. But it did the job it was meant to do.
Now, it will be interesting to see if little nubbie died in vain. ;)
To be continued...

Two Harbors
This one I originally did as part of my Google Street View State Series. I decided to paint it larger, as the original is only 5" x 7" (and can be found here). This one is 24" x 30", oil on gallery wrapped linen. There are probably 10 or 15 in the State Series I'd like to paint a larger version of, and hopefully I can retain some of the same feeling the originals conveyed.

CNN International
POSTPONED FOR NOW. CNN is trying to get the logisitcs worked out with an almost local TV station to use their facilities so people can actually see me (Don't know why they'd want that!). I'll update on a date and time when I have one.

Berkley Street Morning
Here's one I did from Street View. Well, I used a couple of buildings and trees and then changed the seasons, and time of day. Actually unless you look really hard you can't see any resemblance. I curved the road to add interest, left out the vehicles and telephone poles, and added a hint of a building toward the end of the road to draw the eye just a bit.
Don't know if it works. But I've got to tell you, I had a blast painting this one. I'm including the ref so you can see how far I strayed.

Italian Balcony
This is my first painting trying a new brand of paint. UPS did me right and delivered them today. Very nice texture, pigment load, and general overall workability. A thumbs up for the first go round. By the way, they're RGH Artist Oil Paints. Handmade in small batches. And Rolf was very nice to deal with.
Thanks for looking.
